That the first storm attempted by the Ranturhian army had failed to conquer the Hyndraál, that the Standhim had repelled it, if only to emblematic, momentary effect, irked Graclyn Mors sorely, leading him to chastise the commanders—for their setback meant for him a delay in gratification of resentfulness: and temperance was not a virtue in which that man was practiced. He became strident, and none dared gainsay him for he was of the Protectorate. ‘Assail, assail, assail!’ he ordered shrilly, working himself up nigh to heart failure, his yellow eyes turning red for perhaps their first time. ‘For what do you wait? Do not fail again: reserve nothing; levy all your strength if you are so incompetent that nothing short of this will guarantee obliteration of these barrel-bound fish! For they are barrel-bound fish, my good veterans—do not forget this. Raze the Hyndraál, that spite against Naug Faloth which the Protectorate has abided all too long. Slay every last of Standon’s knighthood, and once you have achieved that, go and sweep all of Croftauh’s tributary fiefs, such that when in victory we return to Ôrodrom not even a single trace of his economy will remain. And his wretched slaves we shall free, to whom we shall teach the joy of liberty and the loathsomeness of servitude, so that even their songs to Standon they shall spurn—and soon forget.’

A second offensive was therefore prepared for the following morning involving thrice as many machines and men—as many as could be physically arrayed upon the avenue and about the hillock without detriment—but that attack never happened. Instead, two hours before dawn, the whole of the Standhim force gathered before the outer gate poised for the glory of doom. Alone in the great hall, astride his war-steed and clad in scale armor newly burnished and his red crested-helm, Trainur looked grimly upon the statue of Talathastro’s making wherein he saw an image of Alora—and thus of Standon’s would-be future. He laughed lightly but bitterly.

Then he came out of the keep and addressed the remnants of his men-at-arms who awaited his command, speaking few words, for in their straits terseness alone observed their dignity, but even in his brevity he extolled them for their valor and fealty, and gave them to understand, as the only possible consolation, that the valiant deeds they would soon do—that their very lives—purchased for Standon a chance of deliverance for those few who even then made their way through the secret tunnel. And this heartened the souls of the warriors. Then Trainur signaled for the gate to be opened that he might plunge headlong into the leaguer, while a splendid blare of horns rose up piercing the predawn hour—high, brilliant, emboldening horns!

The Ranturhian commanders, who were just beginning to bustle about in preparation for the fatal strike, froze, not comprehending what they heard, mistaking the horn blares for perhaps the sudden arrival of some unexpected allies of Croftauh. But it was not so. Rather, to their wonder—even to their dread!—they
